Investigating Factors Affecting Homicide with Emphasis on Economic Variables and Gender Equality

Abstract

Gender inequality, due to the unequal access of women and men to the facilities and opportunities in the society, brings various consequences. One of the negative consequences of inequality is that it increases the possibility of people under inequality will face violence in society. Because on the one hand, this people usually do not have the necessary self-confidence to face the threats in the society due to incorrect beliefs such as being worthless, and on the other hand, these incorrect beliefs at the level of society facilitates violence against people under inequality. In this research, the reason for the effect of gender inequality on homicide is explained in the literature, then the effect of the absolute status of women in terms of education, the effect of their relative position in the dimensions of education and the labor market (gender equality) is investigated on homicide. For this purpose, the data of the provinces of Iran during the years 2016-2020 and the panel data approach is used. The findings of this study indicate that the rate of homicide decreases with the improvement in the absolute status of women in the education sector. In addition, the gender equality in terms of participation in the labor market and obtaining job positions has led to a decrease in homicide in the provinces. The results demonstrate that the possibility of adjusting the social harm of homicide by paying more attention to the position of women in society, which can be considered by policy makers.
